PhD studentship Bioengineering, medical engineering: A novel computational model to detect the effects of normal ageing on retinal vascular function

Description :

Ageing is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The assessment of retinal microcirculation is proved to offer an important prognostic and diagnostic tool of the unpredicted, acute circulatory events in the elderly population. Normal data acquisition and interpretation is, however, necessary to differentiate changes due to normal ageing from the first signs of pathology. This is invaluable since early detection and intervention are essential principles in both disease management and maintaining patients’ quality of life (QOL). The aim of this work is to produce a new computational model that facilitates automatic analysis of the retinal vascular function measurements using the Dynamic Retinal Vessel Analyser (DVA, Imedos, GmbH, Germany), an instrument presently used for early detection of vascular dysfunction in diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Programme Description
The research fellowship programme at AKU-ISMC commences in September and offers a unique opportunity to pursue research within an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment. Fellows play an active role in the intellectual life of the Institute, participating in a wide range of seminars, workshops, and conferences. They also enjoy the opportunity of interacting with distinguished faculty at the Institute and from other academic institutions in the United Kingdom. The duration of each fellowship is one year. During this time, candidates explore and shed new light on a specific dimension of one of the Institute’s two major research themes: social and cultural change in Muslim contexts or knowledge construction in the fields related to understanding cultures. These two themes are deliberately open ended and broad in their scope to enable a diverse range of research topics. One example of a research topic that has been derived from the first theme as an area of specific interest at the Institute is the idea of cities as environments for social and cultural change.

The present cohort of fellows (2008/2009) is working on various aspects of social change by examining the dynamics of networks and institutions in Muslim contexts. During the course of this academic year, the Institute will facilitate scholarly dialogue among the research fellows and senior academics who have contributed to the discourse related to civil society and social change within Muslim contexts.

The fellows are expected to produce a research paper on the theme of their fellowship topic, to a standard that is publishable by a quality academic journal, and that can be published in the Institute’s academic publications series. During the course of their fellowship they are required to participate in the educational programmes of the Institute by delivering lectures and seminars as required. Fellows will also contribute to the Institute’s various seminar and discussion series by giving lectures and presenting papers to faculty, students and staff.

Research fellows are also expected to contribute the Muslim Civilisations Abstracts (http://www.aku.edu/ismc/abp.shtml project by writing abstracts and editing papers.

Requirements:
Candidates should have:
• A PhD in the Humanities or Social Sciences;
• A high degree of interest and competence in one of the above research areas;
• A high level of proficiency in communication skills, written and verbal;
• An International English Language Testing System (ELTS) score of at least 6.5 or equivalent is essential.

Funding:
The gross fellowship stipend is £20,000. In addition to the stipend, Fellows from outside the UK will receive a reimbursement of travel expenses for a one-way restricted economy class ticket from their home base to London and single accommodation or a contribution of £800 per month towards a rental accommodation. Other benefits and facilities include: a research grant of up to £500, office space, access to AKU-ISMC’s library and the libraries of neighbouring academic institutions, and access to computer facilities.

The International Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards
The DHPA are highly prestigious, and successful candidates will be considered to have outstanding research potential and will hold the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree as a minimum. The award covers full international student tuition fees plus DHPA scholars should receive at least the minimum Research Council PhD stipend. For the academic year 2009/10 stipend is £13,290.

Alumni Fund Scholarships

The AFS are primarily for current final-year undergraduate students at Manchester who are considering staying on for PhD study at the University, but the award is also open to those who have graduated from the University within the last four years. This award can be in the form of a minimum partial award of £8,000 or a full award of £16,000 per annum.

• Demonstrator opportunities: If you are self-funded or externally-funded, there are opportunities to undertake paid laboratory demonstrator duties.

• Teaching Assistantships: Teaching assistantships are full-time studentships funded by the school in return for some part-time work. Teaching assistants have a scholarship equivalent to the ESPRC scholarship, plus an honorarium for the work they do. Teaching Assistants work part time in term-time, aiding staff in various teaching-related duties. These duties might include supervising laboratories, preparing and marking course work and taking tutorials and examples classes. There may possibly be an opportunity to give a small number of lectures on courses where the material matches your personal expertise. The work should occupy approximately one full day per week. This enables you to be registered for a full time MPhil/PhD.

Conditions of Work
The work as a teaching assistant should occupy a total of about 180 hours plus some preparation time throughout the year, or approximately one full day a week. The TA will be registered for full-time MPhil or PhD. The precise duties are at the discretion of the Director of the Undergraduate School of the School of Computer Science.

Amount of Award
The current amount of the award is living expenses paid at the current EPSRC national minimum rate plus an honorarium (currently £1,575 per annum) in recognition of Teaching Assistant duties. In addition, the School will pay your University fees (at the current home student rate). Teaching Assistantship is a scholarship, not a job. As such, there is no requirement to pay income tax or National Insurance contributions on this award.

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2009, UK

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in 2009 will once again be providing funds for UK organisations to host visits from mid career professionals from the developing Commonwealth whose work is critical to the development of their home country. This will be the eighth year that the Scheme has operated with around sixty five awards now being offered each year to a variety of organisations including NGOs, professional membership bodies, local authorities, charities and voluntary organisations, as well as organisations within the central government and private sectors.

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships support programmes of professional development designed to have a catalytic effect in developing skills that will subsequently be applied in a developing Commonwealth country. Funding will be provided for programmes of typically three months duration, although requests for funding for shorter or longer programmes of up to six months will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Applications are being sought for programmes providing professional development opportunities to individuals in the broadly defined fields of education, engineering/science/technology, environment, governance, public health and agriculture/fisheries/forestry (this one is new for 2009).

Applicants should be capable of devising a coherent and relevant programme and of identifying suitable recipients through existing organisational networks. Fellowships cover the full cost of travel to the UK, living expenses, some UK travel and other approved short course and conference expenses and a contribution to host organisation costs.

Nothumbria International Scholarships 2009/10

: We are delighted to announce details of the range of scholarships available in the 2009/10 academic years. In the current academic year more than 500 students from over 20 different countries have been awarded a Northumbria University International Scholarship.

Most courses at Northumbria University have an intake in September, but a number also have an intake in January or later in the year. Scholarships are available for both intakes.

In most cases the amount of scholarship given will be in the range GBP 500-1000. If you are awarded a scholarship, your tuition fees in your first academic year of study will be reduced by the relevant amount. Scholarships cannot be extended for subsequent years of study.

Eligibility and Selection

You will be eligible for consideration if you have overseas (non-EU) fees status, and dont currently reside within the UK. Applicants for all levels of full-time study at Northumbria’s Newcastle campuses will be considered (NB this does not apply to English Pre-Sessional Programmes).

Selection is based primarily on outstanding academic achievement, although, other factors may be taken into account, such as your level of English proficiency and any professional or non-academic achievements. Financial need cannot and will not be taken into consideration. Scholarships are not awarded automatically.

When the University receives your application form for one of our programmes, you will automatically be assessed for scholarship eligibility. There is no separate scholarship application to complete so it is important that you submit all relevant information with your initial application. You will usually be notified of any award at the same time that you are offered a place at the University.

A PhD is one of the most exciting times in the life of a scientist and has a major influence on their future career. The MRC Clinical Sciences Centre as a place of excellent science and education provides competitive PhD training, offering a outstanding starting platform for a career as a research scientist.

At the CSC, more than 30 research groups are organized in to three sections: Epigenetics, Development and Cancer; Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience, and Genomic, Metabolic and Cardiovascular Medicine. The mix of clinical and basic biological sciences creates a stimulating and flexible environment facilitating a broad education. The 3.5 year research programme provides a comprehensive scientific training in a vibrant international research environment with state-of-the-art research facilities and cutting-edge research projects. Laboratory work is supplemented by seminars, group lab meetings, training courses and participation in conferences. The degree is awarded by Imperial College, an outstanding university, ranked 5th in the world in the Times Higher Education 2007 ranking. More than 60 students from all over the world are currently working at the CSC creating a young dynamic and international atmosphere.
The PhD programme is managed by Prof. Anne Soutar. Students are selected from amongst highly qualified applicants after thorough interviews by a committee representing the CSC research sections. Competitive funding £16500 (non-taxable stipend) is provided for 8 UK PhD students and up to 3 European / International positions. In addition a large number of students supported by external fellowships also start their PhD at the CSC each year.

Students are guided by their supervisor(s) and 2 academic mentors during their PhD. The PhD will promote independence in research and encourages students to develop their own ideas.

The PhD programme at the CSC provides access to a wide variety of training courses, including a 3 day residential Research Skills Course, a fantastic 2 day presentation skills course and a career development course providing guidance for the next steps after PhD study. There is also an excellent lecture programme with featuring invited scientists as well as CSC Group Heads. Students present seminars on their research at the student seminar series, and posters on their research at the CSC Retreat. Each student may attend at least one UK conference and one overseas conference during the course of their PhD, providing invaluable experience and exposure to the wider scientific community.
