Description : The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. It conceptionally combines different research areas (microbial communities, interactions with plant, animal and human hosts and environmental interactions) to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de). JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School prospectively comprising 150 PhD students who are educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. Four faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutions as well as twelve partner companies are participating in this cutting edge research and training program which includes an innovative PhD program, career development and intensive sociocultural care. The genus Lysobacter constitutes a physiologically unique group of organisms within the ??proteobacteria that practices wolf pack behavior to prey on other microbes. The research project is focused on the identification and characterisation of chemical factors that trigger or mediate group predation using methods of molecular biology and analytical chemistry.

Hannover Biomedical Research School, as part of Hannover Medical School (MHH), invites applications for the above PhD studentships, to commence in October 2009.

The three-year study programs, taught in English, are aimed at post-graduates in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine as well as those from Life Science fields. The PhD program “Regenerative Sciences” is also open to students from the various disciplines of Materials Sciences. As well as working on a 3-year research project, students also attend seminars, lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, symposia and summer schools. Successful candidates will be awarded a PhD, alternatively Dr. rer. nat. Postdoc Position in Virology and HIV Research - Germany

In the Department of Virology at Heidelberg University a postdoctoral position (TVL-13) will be available in the laboratory of Oliver T. Keppler. Our team is interested in several exciting research questions ranging from understanding fundamental principles of virus-host interaction to the development of an HIV-susceptible small animal model (Web: http://www.klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de/Keppler.6552.0.html).

Besides classical innate and acquired immune responses, mammals have evolved a set of dominant genes that are capable of suppressing or preventing virus replication at the host cell level. In 2008, human CD317 (BST-2, HM1.24, tetherin) was identified as an interferon-inducible restriction factor, the expression of which prevents the release of fully matured HIV particles from infected cells through surface-protein-based tethers (Neil et al., Nature 2008). The antiviral potency of human CD317 appears to be very broadly acting since all retroviruses and filoviruses tested thus far are restricted. However, the mode of action CD317 employs to induce virion tethering is currently not understood.

Using techniques from molecular virology, cell biology, immunology and biochemistry, the postdoctoral fellow will (i) elucidate the mechanisms by which CD317 induces this potent restriction of virus replication for HIV-1 and other pathogenic viruses; (ii) decipher how the HIV-1 Vpu protein antagonizes the action of human CD317; and (iii) define species-specific characteristics of CD317 to shed light on virus-host coevolution and the regulation of cross-species transmission.

Job description
The successful candidate will work with the newest water balance model WaSiM-ETH 8.2.9 (see http://www.wasim.ch/en/index.html). The focus of the simulation is the evaluation of sealing processes due to erosive rain events in combination with different tillage operations.

Additionally, two dimensional overland flows will be modelled to fully understand different water pathways including infiltration and return flow. A comparison between conventional and ecological soil cultivation will conclude the research.

The applicant is expected to have a Diplom / M.Sc. in civil / environmental engineering or geographic / soil sciences.
Advanced scientific programming skills (FORTRAN90, MATLAB, UNIX) are expected and the ability to work efficiently in a team is regarded as essential.

The position is offered for 18 months. During this time period a PhD thesis can be completed because essential pre-work (data analysis, build-up of the WaSiM model) has already been done.

Giessen University’s International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for their PhDprojects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.

Zur Position:
PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately
€1.000 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. The postdoctoral scholarship, with a monthly stipend of about €1.500, is limited to two years. All scholarships start on 01st October, 2009.

Aufgaben:
Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. PhD scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. All scholarship holders are expected to take up residency in or near Giessen.
