PhD studentship Bioengineering, medical engineering: A novel computational model to detect the effects of normal ageing on retinal vascular function

Description :

Ageing is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The assessment of retinal microcirculation is proved to offer an important prognostic and diagnostic tool of the unpredicted, acute circulatory events in the elderly population. Normal data acquisition and interpretation is, however, necessary to differentiate changes due to normal ageing from the first signs of pathology. This is invaluable since early detection and intervention are essential principles in both disease management and maintaining patients’ quality of life (QOL). The aim of this work is to produce a new computational model that facilitates automatic analysis of the retinal vascular function measurements using the Dynamic Retinal Vessel Analyser (DVA, Imedos, GmbH, Germany), an instrument presently used for early detection of vascular dysfunction in diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Prospective PhD students are expected to have very strong matematical background
